The other day, the uncle next door, with whom my parents and I get along well (even though he's about 20 years older than me), rang the intercom at our entrance. Occasionally, he visits with small gifts in hand.

Most of the time, they're seasonal fruits. Once, he brought over a case of locally sourced B-grade strawberries because they were cheap and suggested making jam out of them. Another time, he brought a large quantity of freshly squeezed yuzu juice and peeled yuzu skins from his own garden (the skins were thoroughly washed, the white pith inside cleaned, and the yellow zest sliced and frozen).

The uncle was holding a crumpled white plastic bag in his left hand, which made me certain he had brought something again.He spread out the contents of the bag so I could see, and showed me what he had brought, saying, "I got these." I had seen "these" being sold somewhere before, but I hadn't seen them recently. The fruits were almost the same size as a person's face and were yellow citrus fruits. When I asked what they were, he told me they were Banpeiyu, a variety of late-season grapefruit. It's amazing how there are still so many things in the world that I haven't tasted or heard of.
